Delhi Wakes Up to Dangerous Smog Following Celebrations

Tuesday brought inhabitants of the planet's dirtiest urban center were faced with inhaling dangerously toxic air that fell into the "critical" range.

Record-Breaking Air Quality Levels

Several parts of the city showed an pollution measurement exceeding 500, which represents ten times the healthy threshold recommended by the WHO.

Particular areas, readings of dangerous airborne particles soared to of eighteen hundred, amounting to 15-20x above safe limits.

Pyrotechnics Restrictions and New Developments

Beginning in 2020, officials had implemented a total prohibition on the purchase and ignition of pyrotechnics during the Festival of Lights due to their major role to the hazardous smog that engulfs the metropolis as colder weather approaches.

Yet recently, the current city leadership petitioned the highest court to propose a modification of the restrictions.

Officials advocated for allowing "environmentally conscious pyrotechnics" – historically doubted by conservation groups as being only approximately one-third reduced emissions – as a middle ground between "heritage and public health".

Legal Decision and Implementation

Much to the frustration of public health and environmental activists, judges approved the request, stipulating that green firecrackers could be ignited during specific hours throughout the Diwali.

On Monday night, there was extensive violation of the regulated periods across the city, with little regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the eco-friendly variety.

Many monitoring devices throughout the city recorded air quality spiking around midnight to extremely hazardous readings observed during Diwali in at least three years.

International Effects

The proliferation of fireworks during the celebrations also initiated a controversy with bordering Pakistan, with officials in Pakistani Punjab province partly blaming worsening atmospheric conditions in their urban centers on hazardous particles coming from neighboring India following the festivities.

Chronic Pollution Issue

Extremely elevated concentrations of pollution in the city have continued as a significant issue for more than 15 years, with the condition continuing to worsen.

Around the festival period, the concentration of hazardous particulate matter in the air has been observed to spike to 70% higher the peak levels ever recorded in the Chinese city, which was formerly viewed as the world's most polluted urban center.

Various Pollution Factors

This crisis in the city is caused by a mix of various sources including transportation pollution, airborne particles, building projects, rubbish burning and smoke from agricultural fires in neighbouring areas of Punjab and Haryana.

Within these states, agricultural workers routinely set their fields on fire to clear them quickly, producing dangerous pollution that becomes contained over the capital as colder air arrives.

Public Health and Economic Consequences

Public health and economic consequences on the nearly 33 million residents residing in the Delhi area is significant, according to various studies.

This pollution results in increased incidence of nervous system, heart and circulatory and breathing disorders, and can potentially cause oncological diseases.

Environmental contamination is calculated to be causing approximately 10k untimely fatalities annually in the city.
