Former President's Tariffs Hurt Luxury Tea Exports to the US, Reports Retail Executive

The chief executive of a well-known British retailer revealed that recent US trade policies have hurt international exports of premium tea products to US-based buyers.

More Stringent Sourcing Guidelines and Duty Adjustments

According to the CEO, American import agents now require that tea products containing components from India must be labeled as sourced from those regions, subjecting them liable to significant tariffs.

Additionally, the elimination of the low-value rule for shipments priced under $800 has further affected international orders and raised prices for end consumers.

Cost Increases and Customer Worries

As an instance, a 250g container of loose leaf tea that previously retailed for around $28 now includes delivery costs starting at over $25 due to revised duty rules.

These changes have made shoppers hesitant about purchasing presents from abroad, fearing they may face surprise fees upon delivery.

Additional Market Pressures

In recent years, broader inflationary pressures have also contributed to price rises on tea in the home market, with certain blends going up by nearly 40 percent.

Overseas sales previously represented approximately 5.5% of overall income, highlighting the impact of international trade for the retailer.

“System-wise, we are perfect, however it just means prices will go up,” said the CEO.

The situation remains an developing challenge for retailers engaged in cross-border commerce.
