A curious reader asks two intriguing questions: Which player is the most prolific player with the initials XG?” and “Which athlete boasts the highest goals and assists among athletes with the first letters GA?”
Leading XG Players
Among the small group of male players worldwide with the first letters XG, a Greek midfielder scored 17 goals during his club career, along with three for the Greek youth team. However, he cannot match the scoring exploits of Xhevdet Gela, who netted 44 times across all competitions, including the Europa League with Finnish sides MyPa and Lahti. Unusually, during a spell from 2019 to 2022, the forward was playing for Ekenäs while simultaneously managing a fourth-tier team located 80km away. Gela came back to manage Esbo in January of this year, though no longer as a player.
Information on other XG footballers are sparse. An Andorran defender never left the domestic league, while Xabi Garalde made a single game in Segunda B. Xavier García managed to net once in a qualifying match against the Cayman Islands. A China international is perhaps the best known player with XG, but as a shot-stopper, he never added to the scorers.
Top GA Contributors
Regarding footballers with the first letters GA, thousands have competed across the globe. However if we narrow it to those who have played in World Cups, two names stand out. A German forward achieved 183 goals and assists (113 goals, 70 set-ups) over a 19-year career, though a lot of his later seasons were spent in lower leagues. But the top name is Georgi Asparuhov. Known as the Artist, he netted 150 goals in 247 league games and was prolific in European games for Levski Sofia. He also scored his nation's maiden finals score in 1962 at age 19. He finished with 188 career strikes before his tragic death in a vehicle accident at age 28.
Maybe Asparuhov’s most famous strike was against the Three Lions at the famous stadium in 1968. Starting in his defensive end, he dribbled past the entire defence before slotting coolly into the bottom corner. Sir Bobby Charlton later said, “Players as gifted as him are not born every day.” In 1999, Asparuhov was chosen the nation's best ever player over Hristo Stoichkov. We can only imagine how many more scores he would have gone on to score.
Within the English top flight, the top contributions among GA footballers belongs to a former Aston Villa star with 108 (74 scores, 34 helpers).
* It’s much harder to find historical data for the female game – but if you have any examples of XG scorers, feel free to get in touch.
Hungary Goal Question
All of the best scorers for Hungary all concluded their careers in the 20th century,” observed Cameron McGlone. “Which other countries lack a top-10 scorer who has played in the 2000s?”
Peter Tomlin delivered the answer: none. “I’ve looked through every single national team history, I determined that there are zero other teams without a leading ten scorer who played in the modern era. A few countries – the Southeast Asian side, Malaysia, and Poland – have 8 of their top 10 dating back to the 1900s.”
For Indonesia, their number three scorer – a retired star – and number five scorer another attacker both competed in the 2000s. Malaysia’s tied sixth scorer Safee Sali and eighth-highest a current player also feature in the modern era.
Poland’s all-time leading scorer is Robert Lewandowski, who remains playing and adding to his tally. Another modern player is joint-ninth in the rankings. It could be argued that the national side of a small island have no scorers in the 2000s – actually, they have no scored at all in their only matches.
Different Kits in the One Match
After a recent question about clubs using parts of three various kits in one match, fans shared additional examples.
Mike Morris writes that in Manchester United's infamous ‘grey shirts’ match against Southampton, they used dark shirts, light shorts from their primary strip, and white socks from no kit. They switched to their alternate jersey in the second half, resulting in elements of four different uniforms.
A further case involved a team now known as Bournemouth in 1957. Not prepared to swap kits due to a clash, they borrowed blue shirts from Portsmouth and sported them during an domestic cup tie. It must have been a good omen as they proceeded to have their best ever cup run.
A London club had a rule in the mid-century that visiting sides could not wear the same socks. Spurs often played at their ground in white jerseys with yellow socks.
In 2013, a Championship team had to buy Crystal Palace's gold away kit from the club shop after the official ruled their usual colors not acceptable. They kept their maroon socks, leading to taunts from the local supporters.
Roger Kirby recalls a 1993 match where a famous team wore a specially commissioned strip with very dark blue stripes. Newcastle had to wear their navy change kit to prevent a clash.

A fan once inquired about unique ways to decide matches or tournaments, citing a 50s final in Europe that was decided on corners.
Another supporter mentioned the Anglo-Italian Cup from the early 90s. Bristol Rovers lost to West Ham on a official's coin toss after being level on standings and goal difference. They were a coin flip away from qualifying to a continental tournament.
Your Turn
Ian Golightly notes that a player scored a hat-trick for Dunfermline in this year, while his dad Andy Tod did the identical in two decades prior. Does anyone know of any other cases of a parent and child both scoring a hat-trick for the one club?
James Bolle notes that on a particular Saturday, eight league fixtures took place in the English capital, accounting for 19% of total league fixtures. Was there ever a higher percentage of professional games in one city? Additionally, with many London teams competing at home, it was a particularly localized day.
An enthusiast writes about Liverpool setting a top-flight record by winning four straight games with late goals. Were there ever five or more such wins in a row in the old First Division era or elsewhere?
A concerned supporter writes that the two Steel City teams are at the bottom in the Championship. Should this continue, it would be the initial time both have been demoted in the same season. Has a city ever have such a occur before? Plus, which three demoted teams have had the tightest geographical spread?
